How to clean a gong

If you use your gong very regularly or if it has stood unprotected in the room for a long time, it is possible that a light coating will form on the surface after some time. This can be caused by frequent touching or can simply settle out of the air, much like the lubricating film on a window pane. To prevent your gong from changing luster or color, regular maintenance is important. We have summarized for you how to take care of your Feng Gong, TamTam Gong or other types of Gong.

The most important facts in brief

  • The metals used in a gong, can corrode if not properly cared for.
  • Regular cleaning prevents changes in color or gloss.
  • There are different simple methods to clean your gong.
  • Our cleaning tips will not affect the sound of your gong in any way.
  • You prevent contamination by protecting your gong with a cover or bag.

Why do stains appear on my gong?

Very frequent touching of your gong and dust or moisture from the air can cause contamination to build up on your gong over time. If a gong is not sealed and comes into contact with saline or acidic liquids, corrosion can occur. In the process, bacteria react with the metal and red-brown stains appear on the surface. Copper emerges and leads to the discoloration of the metal. While this doesn’t really damage the gong, it doesn’t look very nice.

Oils or fats can also lead to oxidation and cause stains on the gong. Since a gong is made of different metals, this can also create electrical stresses that lead to corrosion. If a gong is not adequately protected or regularly cleaned, it will lose its luster.

Tip

If you live or travel in areas with a more humid climate or spend long periods of time near the sea, you should pay special attention to the protection and care of your gong. High humidity or salty air can accelerate corrosion.

How can I clean my gong?

For the care of gongs, we have developed a biodegradable cleaning stone with which you can easily clean and polish your gong.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Rub a moistened sponge lightly over the cleaning stone.
  2. Squeeze the sponge several times to create a fine cleansing foam.
  3. Use the damp sponge to rub the inside and outside surface of the gong for a few minutes. (Attention: For the TamTam gong, the plaster stone may only be applied to the shiny surface!)
  4. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth until no residue of the cleaning stone remains.
  5. Rinse the cloth briefly in between and repeat the process.
  6. Then rub the gong dry with a soft cloth.

Notes:

Our cleaning stone is environmentally friendly, degradable and very productive. You only need a small amount to clean a large gong.

You should do the dry rubbing at the end of the cleaning process very carefully so that no powder residues remain and contaminate your gong mallet. Also, avoid using harsh cleaners. They can damage the metal of your gong and make it look unsightly.

Cleaning gongs for light soiling

For light soiling, we recommend using a soft cotton cloth. Polish the gong with quick movements on the front and back to remove small stains or even brake marks from gong drivers. If you warm the cloth slightly beforehand, polishing is even easier.

How often should I clean my gong and does this affect the sound?

Usually, over time, a gong develops a very individual patina. If you want to preserve the shiny gold color of your gong, we recommend gently cleaning it about every two months. Especially for instruments used in sound therapy, we recommend regular cleaning.

Some gong players rarely clean their instrument intensively. The individual patina, which develops even faster as a result, distinguishes the gong from others and is often even desired. So, in this case, it is also enough to perform an occasional gentle cleaning with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and dirt.

The sound of the gong is not affected by careful, regular cleaning. However, we advise you to follow our tips so that you do not damage the surface.

How to protect your gong

It is best to store your gong in a soft case or gong bag. Especially during transport or when you don’t use it for a longer time, your gong should be well protected.
